Kitchen remodeling in Rockland County, NY: cabinets, countertops, floors and layout

A kitchen remodel in Rockland County, NY is a sequence of decisions more than a single job: cabinets, countertops, backsplash, floor, and sometimes a wall that comes down to open the room. We do the remodeling work itself — kitchen cabinet installation, countertop installation, tile, flooring and carpentry — in New City, Nanuet, Pomona, Monsey, Suffern and nearby towns, while plumbing and gas changes are done by licensed plumbers (gas work by a licensed plumber) and electrical changes by licensed electricians. The order matters. Appliances are chosen before cabinets are ordered, countertops are measured from cabinets that are already installed, and whatever is inside a wall is settled before it is opened. You get a written estimate that lists what is included, so you know what will be done before the kitchen is taken apart.

What the work includes

What to decide before you start

In a kitchen remodel, a decision made late usually means waiting. Settle these before anything is taken apart:

New cabinets, or keep the ones you have?

If the cabinet boxes are solid, the layout works and the doors close straight, new countertops, a new backsplash and new hardware can change the kitchen without tearing it out. Stone and quartz tops are heavy, so the old boxes have to be level and sound to carry them. Replacing the cabinets makes sense when the boxes are particleboard that has swollen, the drawers keep coming apart, or the layout itself is what does not work. Look under the sink first. A swollen or stained cabinet floor there usually means a leak that has been running for a while — find where it comes from before new cabinets go over it; see Leak Behind a Wall.

Taking down the wall between the kitchen and the dining room

Opening up the kitchen starts with two questions about the wall. First, does it carry load? If floor or ceiling joists rest on it, the work requires an engineer's design for the beam and a building permit, and the building department will ask for the engineered drawings. Second, what runs inside it? A plumbing vent, a heating duct or a circuit inside the wall does not disappear when the wall comes down — it has to be moved somewhere else: the pipes by a licensed plumber, the wiring by a licensed electrician and the heating duct by a licensed HVAC contractor. Both answers are known before demolition, and they decide whether the beam hangs below the ceiling or sits flush with it.
